Bienen Faculty Profile: Carlos Abril
"Whether it's using iPods, composing music on laptops, or playing video games like Guitar Hero, technology has significantly changed the way people engage with and come to understand music. That seems to indicate it may be time to rethink the models we are using to involve students with music. At Northwestern I am fortunate to pursue this work with students who are bright, motivated, engaging, and thoughtful about the work that they do and the impact they want to have on the world around them."
Carlos Abril is an Associate Professor of Music Education. He has co-edited the book Musical Experiences in Our Lives, which examines music teaching and learning throughout the lifespan, and published articles on cultural diversity in music in major research journals in music education. Abril is involved in the Ravinia Education and Community Partnerships Program, where he works with teachers in the Chicago Public Schools to develop curricula that incorporate music in meaningful ways.
