Facilities

The Technological Institute is one of the largest academic buildings in the world, with 750,000 square feet of floor space and over a mile (6,300 feet) of linear corridors. Tech houses numerous classrooms, computer labs, and research facilities. The Seeley G. Mudd Library for Science and Engineering (SEL) contains 248,000 books and bound journal volumes covering every field of science and engineering. Three other science and technical branch libraries are located on the Evanston campus.

The Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center, Northwestern's first environmentally sustainable building, opened in 2005. This over 75,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility includes a CAD/CAM lab, rapid prototyping and design prototyping workshops, a biomedical / chemical engineering lab, a mechatronics lab, design classrooms and study spaces, conference and research rooms, a large auditorium, an automobile testing section, project display areas, and a care and student lounge.

Students interested in the historical, philosophical and cultural aspects of science and technology may choose to live in a new residential college, the Slivka Residential College of Science and Engineering. This residential college, opened in the fall of 2002, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including an Ethernet café with computer workstations, wireless Ethernet connections, and a small stage for student performances. A Discovery Room provides students with the tools and equipment to expand and apply their knowledge and practice their technical skills. Recent fireside topics in the college have included ethics in science and engineering, lasers and optics. Residents also participate in service projects, and attend cultural and artistic events together.
