Evanston and Chicago

Evanston

A short subway ride north of Chicago, Evanston is the perfect combination of college town and bustling small city. Downtown Evanston is just a block from Northwestern's lakefront campus, and its beaches, cultural events, and restaurants representing culinary traditions from around the world are just steps from each other.

When the Chicago Tribune recently wrote about neighborhoods around Chicago, downtown Evanston was rated number one. "Who needs downtown Chicago? Evanston residents have on their doorstep movie theatres, bookstores, new and used record stores, and their own symphony, not to mention choice live theater and music venues. Spend a day browsing in Bookman's Alley, rocking at Reckless Records and sipping latte at the coffee joint Kafein, and you won't miss the city a bit."

Evanston is a place you'll be happy to call home for the next four years, a community that shapes and is shaped by the experiences of Northwestern students. The best way to get a sense of the city's charm is to explore it yourself. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Chicago

Life in Chicago is a study in rich and revealing contrasts: it's home to Oprah, Obama, the Mercantile Exchange, and a patchwork of vital, culturally distinct neighborhoods; the Bears, the Bulls, the Fire, the Cubs, and the White Sox; it's the cradle of modern architecture, deep-dish pizza, world-class museums, innovative theatre, and improv comedy.

One of the great urban centers of the world is just a few miles from Northwestern's main campus. For our students Chicago is a classroom, a playground, and a proving ground. For more information on Chicago:
