Introduction
125 faculty (full and part-time)
410 full-time students
Since 1895, Northwestern University's School of Music has been a leading institution in the training of musicians, music educators, composers, theorists, music technologists, and historians. Through performance and academic studies, students gain a deep understanding of music and its capacities as a form of human expression. At the same time, the School of Music is not a conservatory; students must take a core of general education courses in the Weinberg College of Art and Sciences. With a campus located just 12 miles away from the cultural resources of the city of Chicago, students can be inspired by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, and countless other performing groups.
The key to your education is intensive one-on-one training with our celebrated faculty, including members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, internationally acclaimed soloists, and sought-after conductors, clinicians, and scholars.
The curriculum in the School of Music consists of musical theory and history, aural and piano skills, lessons, and electives in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences as well as other undergraduate schools.
The School of Music awards the bachelor of music and the bachelor of arts in music degrees.
